Welcome to IST 494

This blog will serve as our online classroom where we will share our perspectives on the texts and films that we read and view each week. The blog will allow you to engage with the course material in depth and practice writing for a public audience as you create your own blog posts and post comments on your classmates'. My hope is that this blog will work as a space for free and civil debate about the ideas and issues that we explore in the course, and that our online dialogue will inspire our reflection about and research on social class and its relationship with contemporary culture.

Two model blogs:

Professor Tonya Krouse's post on People Like Us (the first film we will watch this semester). Professor Krouse's post and her students' follow-up comments represent the kind of intellectual exchanges I want us to create in our blog.

Student Mark Hixenbaugh's blog on The Changing World of Work (a book I taught in a previous course). Familiarize yourself with the blog format so you can emulate Mark's awesome use of multi-media elements like web-based images, political cartoons, YouTube videos, etc.

Specific directions for future blog assignments can be found on Blackboard under the "Assignments" tab.

For now, take a few minutes to introduce yourself in a comment to this post. I'll go first.

I am professor Kirk Boyle, also known by literature and writing students at Northern Kentucky University and the University of Cincinnati as "Dr. B." This is my ninth year of teaching at the collegiate level, and my first with NKU's Integrative Studies program. I completed my Doctorate in English and Comparative Literature at the University of Cincinnati in 2009, and have published articles in Jump Cut, Film-Philosophy, The International Journal of Žižek Studies, and The Journal of Philosophy and Scripture. I'm looking forward to exploring the worlds of social class and contemporary culture with you.

Okay, your turn...

  1. My name is Bridget Niece. I have been a student off and on at NKU for a long time. Initially I studied biology for many of those years and studied in Ireland for a year in aquatic science. Since my study abroad, my life has taken me in a new direction. I intend to pursue my BSN in nursing at the accelerated level this fall and eventually I hope to teach nursing. I am engaged and set to be married on June 26. I look forward to this course!

  3. hello, my name is Phylip Gardner and i'm now a senior at NKU hoping to graduate in 8 weeks! i started out as a Music Education major and after 5 semesters decided it wasn't going to work to well for me, then tried a semester in the computer informatics program which didn't catch my interest, so now i'm in the integrated studies program so i'm not here for years on end endlessly changing majors trying to figure out what i want. i'm engaged to a future elementary teacher who is also graduating in 8 weeks, and we're getting married on hollows eve this year which will mark our 7th year together.
i enjoy music, and video games and then i currently work at a skating rink, and as a pizza delivery person.

  4. My name is Emily Haubner and I am from Cincinnati, Ohio. My first major at NKU was Elementary Education. This obviously did not work out for me, which seems to be the case for a few others. My major now is Integrated Studies and if everything goes as planned, I will be graduating in eight weeks!! I am so excited! I’m new to this whole online course. I have never taken one before, so I’m anxious to see how this course goes!

  6. My name is Eric Chase, I currently live in Newport, KY, and I'm looking forward with squeamish anticipation to graduation this spring. I initially declared journalism as my major, but ended up deciding that my career options were limited and unappetizing, and switched to Integrated Studies. I'm still not entirely sure what direction I want to take in my career, although an advanced degree seems a likely course of action.
This is also my first online course -- not to mention my first second-session course, which makes me slightly nervous, but all hope is not yet lost, eh?

  8. My name is Lee Ballard and I am from Dry Ridge, Kentucky. I am a senior, and I hope to graduate in May! I was Undeclared for a long time. When the director of the NKU Grant County Campus told me about the Integrative Studies major it seemed perfect. I have to admit that I've been stressing out about this course about because I had no idea what to expect. Having said that, I'm also excited and I can't wait to finish up my last semester and get to know all of you.

When I graduate I'm going back how for a while... I just recently changed my major to Integrative Studies in 09, I like the freedom that comes with building the degree. Also, I am very new to boggling so please bear with me. :-)

  10. Hello everyone,
My name is Lindsey Shoupe and I am from Fort Thomas, KY. I am 25, graduated high school in 2003, attended EKU for 3 semesters, moved to Orlando, FL where I did an internship at Walt Disney World and came back home in 2005 and started attending school @ NKU. My major for 4 years was Athletic Training & I decided, a semester short of graduating, that it was not what I wanted to do with/for the rest of my life. I switched to Integrative Studies to graduate as fast as I could. I hope to start the MAT program here @ NKU in the fall to become a middle grades mathematics teacher! I am taking 18 hours this semester and am really worried about adding the workload of this course to everything I already have going on! However, I am also looking forward to meeting all of you and hopefully learning and growing through this class experience!
